EU Digital Product Passport (DPP)
The EU Digital Product Passport (DPP) is a key element of the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR, EU 2024/1781). The DPP will provide standardised information about a product's environmental sustainability, including materials, repairability, recyclability, and carbon footprint. DPPs will be linked to products via a data carrier (QR code, RFID, etc.).
Implementation Timeline
The ESPR entered into force on July 18, 2024. The European Commission will adopt delegated acts specifying DPP requirements for specific product categories. The first product categories to be covered are expected to include: batteries (DPP requirements from 2027); textiles (from 2030); electronics and ICT equipment; furniture; and construction products.
DPP Data Requirements
DPPs will contain product-specific information including: unique product identifier; manufacturer information; materials and substances; energy performance; repairability score; spare parts availability; end-of-life instructions; and carbon footprint. The specific data requirements will be set out in delegated acts for each product category.
